McGill kicks off annual Centraide fundraising campaign

McGill once again partners with Centraide on historic 50th campaign

McGill’s annual fundraising campaign in support of Centraide of Greater Montreal is officially underway, with the aim of raising $425,000 to fight poverty.

“McGill is proud to renew its commitment as a partner of Centraide,” says Principal Deep Saini. “The goal is one that we can all get behind: making Montreal more socially and economically inclusive.”

Centraide’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty and social exclusion in local communities. It currently helps one out of five people living in the Greater Montreal Area and supports over 375 local community organizations and projects.

This year is Centraide’s 50th fundraising campaign, highlighting 50 years of solidarity with community partners like McGill. The University’s co-chairs are Martha Crago, Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation) and Anja Geitmann, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

“On this the 50th anniversary of the Greater Montreal Centraide campaign, McGill has again set an ambitious fundraising goal, but our aspirations are higher,” says Vice-Principal Crago. “McGill strives to fulfill its mission to reach out and to serve the people most in need here in Montreal and in Quebec. I call on our campus community to get involved and to demonstrate the passion we share for making a difference. The funds we raise will directly benefit people experiencing economic instability and social exclusion. Every donation counts.”

Dean Geitmann is serving as Co-chair for the third year in a row. “The McGill community is an integral part of greater Montreal area,” she says. “Sharing the spirit of community can be done in many ways, and giving to Centraide is a particularly effective one, especially given the rapidly growing number of Montrealers in need.”

The University’s campaign goal of $425,000 is the same amount that McGill targeted – and exceeded – in 2022.

Helping Montreal’s most vulnerable

Centraide works with a network of local agencies active in four areas of action: supporting youth success, accessing food and housing, breaking social isolation, and building caring communities.

Details on how gifts to Centraide make a lasting impact in people’s lives are available on McGill’s Centraide Campaign website. It also lists the University’s upcoming fundraising events.

McGill is just one of many institutions in Greater Montreal that collaborates annually with Centraide to fight poverty. The combined efforts of thousands of donors have raised millions of dollars to support vulnerable communities – which represents approximately 75 per cent of Centraide’s total annual fundraising.

Support McGill’s Centraide campaign

All McGill University employees and students are eligible to take part in the Centraide fundraising campaign, which runs until December 22, 2023.

Donors can specify the total amount to give over the course of the year, which will then be spread evenly over 26 pay cycles. For questions, please email Nancy Wong.
