McGill University ranked 44th in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2025, published earlier today. This is three rungs higher than its 47th-place finish in 2024. The University has placed in the global top 50 every year since the rankings’ inception in 2011.
Among North American public universities, McGill is ranked 11th. It finished eighth among its peers in the Association of American Universities.
The rankings list universities according to their perceived academic excellence. The latest list is based on a survey of 55,000 senior academics from around the world.
Reputation is evaluated using three main methods: spontaneous voting for universities deemed to have high reputations; presenting voters with a list of five universities to be ranked in order, which invites them to consider a wider range of institutions than they might nominate spontaneously; and voter diversity, which rewards universities that receive votes from voters in a wide range or territories and subject areas. The results provide insight into how institutions’ research and teaching are viewed internationally.
A total of 300 universities are ranked in this year’s edition, up from 200 in 2024. There are 38 countries/territories represented, up from 31 last year.
McGill is trending upward in recent THE rankings. In the THE World University Rankings, a different ranking based on a broad array of performance indicators, McGill jumped to 45th from 49th in the latest list, published in October 2024.
