McGill takes women’s hockey tournament for third straight year

By Jim Hynes

School was still out but a number of McGill varsity sports teams were back in action, taking part in some holiday-time tournaments.

The No. 1-ranked hockey Martlets captured the annual Theresa Humes Women’s Hockey Tournament at Concordia University this past weekend by beating the No.8-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues 9-0 in the Final. It was the third consecutive Humes tournament victory for the Martlets, who outscored their opponents by a score of 21-2 over three games and extended their winning streak against Canadian university opponents to 36 games. McGill claimed the title without two key members of the team, forward Ann-Sophie Bettez and defenseman Catherine Ward, who are members of the under-22 Canadian national team currently taking part in the MLP Nations Cup in Ravensburg, Germany.

The Martlets return to league play on Jan. 10 when they face Carleton in Ottawa. McGill boasts an 18-0 record against CIS opponents this season, where it is 21-2 overall. The team won three of the five exhibition contests it played against NCAA teams this fall.

Mixed results in hoops tourneys

The basketball Redmen prepared for the second half of their season by easily taking both of their games at UQAM’s Classique des Citadins basketball tournament Dec. 28-29, beating UNB 90-52 and the Royal Military College 94-43. The one-sided wins were only good enough for second place in the tournament, however, as the host Citadins claimed the event title on point differential. The Redmen return to league play against the very same Citadins at the Currie Gym Jan. 9.

The basketball Martlets fared less well in the Concordia-Reebok Invitational basketball tournament Dec. 28-30, dropping all three of their games, including hard-fought battles against Memorial (66-62) and Carleton (56-53). Losers of six straight going back to their 64-60 defeat of Bishop’s in the Pink Ribbon Game last Nov. 14, the Martlets also return to action on Jan. 9 when they face their UQAM counterparts at Currie Gym.

In other upcoming varsity sports action, the hockey Redmen return from a long layoff to face York at the McConnell Arena Jan. 9. The Volleyball Martlets, back from the

Innisbrook Resort Volleyball Invitational in Clearwater Florida (where they posted a 1-2 record) play in Sherbrooke Jan. 9 and return to host Laval at the McGill Sports Centre Gymnasiums Jan. 10.
