Jana Miller was recently named the winner of the Nova Scotia Talent Trust’s $1,500 Portia White Award. The honour is given to a Nova Scotian music student and is named in honour of Portia White, a Nova Scotia artist who overcame adversity to achieve international acclaim as a classical singer on the great stages of Europe and North America. Born in Truro, Miller is studying voice performance at McGill.

The Boston Herald included Matt Haimovitz‘s album Figment on its top 10 list of the best classical music albums of 2009. Long a fan of the Schulich School of Music performance professor’s work, the Herald once wrote “Matt Haimovitz may be the coolest cellist of our time” for Haimovitz’s penchant for bringing classical music to the masses by playing in such untraditional venues as pizza parlours and New York’s infamous punk club, CBGB.
