Quebec election day: Classes cancelled, University open

Quebec goes to the polls on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018. Eligible students can also vote on campus at advance polls.

General Elections are taking place on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018. In accordance with the Quebec Election Act, all classes, labs and exams in all Faculties – as well as in the School of Continuing Studies – will be cancelled that day.

University administrative offices, as well as McGill Libraries, will remain open as usual on Election Day.  According to Section 335 of the Election Act, all McGill employees eligible to vote must be given four (4) consecutive hours for voting, not counting the time normally allowed for meals. In most cases, this requirement can be met by allowing staff to leave at 4:00 p.m.

McGill students who are eligible to vote in the Quebec elections can vote before Election Day by casting their ballots at the advance polling station at the Carrefour Sherbrooke student residence (475 Sherbrooke Street West). The advance polling stations will be open on four days:

  • Sept. 21, 25 and 26: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Sept. 27: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Students must present valid McGill ID to electoral staff to access the polling area.

Staff and students can check whether they’re registered on the list of electors by consulting Élections Québec.
