News in brief for the week of November 29, 2010

NSERC recognizes the McGill Metals Processing Centre, the McGill Middle East Program in Civil Society and Peace Building was awarded one of five 2010 Peace Medals by the YMCAs of Quebec, and two McGillians were named to the list of Canada’s 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians for 2010.

NSERC recognizes MMPC

The McGill Metals Processing Centre (MMPC) was recognized on Nov. 25 for its special and long lasting contribution to Canadian industrial innovation. Director Roderick Guthrie and Research Manager Mihaiela Isac received the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Leo Derikx Award at a ceremony in Montreal. Worth $200,000, the award is given in recognition of “an established innovative model of long-standing university-industry partnership in pre-competitive R&D that has improved the general well-being of an industry,” and is one of four Synergy Awards that NSERC confers to universities and industry partners.

Peace Medal for MMEP

The McGill Middle East Program in Civil Society and Peace Building (MMEP) was recently awarded one of five 2010 Peace Medals by the YMCAs of Quebec. The medals were awarded to groups and individuals working to promote peaceful causes, whether in their community or around the world.

McGill pair make Top 10 list

Dr. Alberto J. Aguayo of the Centre for Research in Neuroscience and McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Raquel del Carpio, Vice-Chair of the Montreal General Hospital’s Dept. of Diagnostic Radiology, were named to the list of Canada’s 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians for 2010. Winners were chosen from 26 nominees coming from five provinces and representing nine countries of origin. The honourees were selected by a panel of judges comprised of past winners and business executives.
