Hall of Famers
Two McGillians, Dr. Alberto Aguayo and Dr. Jonathan C. Meakins (1882-1959) were among the six laureates inducted to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame on April 28.
Professor Emeritus Aguayo and his team were the first to show that nerve fibres and function in the central nervous system of adult mammals could be restored after injury. Meakins, McGill’s former dean of medicine, was an advocate of health insurance.
Hart earns Helton
McGill Law student Sasha Hart has been awarded a 2011 Helton Fellowship for projects in international law awarded by American Society of International Law (ASIL). Selected from more than 50 applicants from around the world, the students will receive micro-grants of $2,000 to pursue work on issues involving international law, human rights, humanitarian affairs and related areas.
Hart will conduct fieldwork and legal research relating to Equality Effect’s 160 Girls project in Kenya this summer. This initiative aims to achieve immediate justice for 160 girls in eastern Kenya who have been raped, as well as long-term justice for all girls in Kenya.
McGill 1-2 punch
McGill teams finished first and second at the Canadian L’Oréal Brandstorm Competition finals. McGill’s first-place team consisted of BCom students Ivana Bogaert Defillo, Michael-Ryan Boychuk and Melanie Ioanna who will now represent Canada in Paris, France at the International L’Oréal Brandstorm Competition against 40 other countries the week of June 13. The team of Anna Chif, Anthony Lecossois and Aquil Virani came second. The L’Oreal Brandstorm challenge this year was to attract men to professional salons, imagine a new concept and its associated range of products for L’Oréal Professional Homme brand.
