McGill duo wins inaugural student fellowships
Pascal Genest-Richard, Bioresource Engineering, and Alex Pritz, MSE, have been named winners of the inaugural 3M National Student Fellowships along with eight other students from Canadian universities. The national awards, co-sponsored by 3M Canada and the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE), honour full-time university students who have demonstrated qualities of outstanding leadership and who embrace a vision where the quality of their educational experience can be enhanced in academia and beyond.
In their citation, Fellowship officials said Genest-Richard’s “combination of abilities, combined with the other leadership traits of commitment, curiosity, passion and generosity, shows that he meaningfully engages people for change.”
Of Pritz, organizers said, “He has a grasp on the challenges that face students and leads by example.”
Piper to get paid
Andrew Piper was recently named winner of an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation New Directions Fellowship. Valued at $110,000, it is awarded to humanities researchers “whose research interests call for formal training in a discipline other than the one in which they are expert.” Piper, an associate professor of German studies in the Linguistics Dept. who looks at the intersection of literary and bibliographic communication from the 18th century to the present, will use the Fellowship to study computer programming and quantitative analysis.
CADR smiles on Dentistry students
Two Dentistry students were recently named winners of Student Research Awards from the Canadian Association for Dental Research.
Post-doctoral Fellow Vahid Ravaghi was awarded first place in the Senior – Clinical Research Category for his research project on “The magnitude of oral health inequalities in the Canadian population.”
Grad student Adila Khan was awarded second place in the Junior Category for her research project on “16s RNA metagenomics-based survey of oral biofilms in obese children.”
The awards provide travel funds for the presentation of their research at the annual conference of the Canadian (CADR) and American (AADR) Associations for Dental Research
