McGill’s Library & Information Science places seventh best in the world in Shanghai subject rankings 

Five subjects taught at McGill are in the global top 50, and 18 in the top 100  

McGill University’s diverse academic strengths were prominently recognized in the 2024 Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), released Nov. 11. Five subjects taught at McGill were rated among the top 50 in the world, out of offerings at more than 5,000 universities across 96 countries and regions.

The University’s top performer was Library & Information Science, ranked seventh in the world. Rounding out McGill’s global top 50 subjects were Human Biological Science (23rd), Psychology (28th), Mining and Mineral Engineering (34th) and Statistics (46th).

In all, the University had 18 subjects ranked in the top 100, ranging from Earth Sciences and Dental & Oral Sciences to Law and Transportation Science and Technology.

GRAS ranks universities in 55 subjects, spanning Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. The rankings use a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of leading universities in respective subjects. These indicators include research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards.
