McGill has nudged up in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the Shanghai Rankings, reaching its highest level since this set of rankings was established in 2003.
Again third in Canada, behind the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia, McGill placed 58th in the world this year, compared with 63rd last year. UofT placed 28th and UBC ranked 40th.
In the previous five years. we have ranked between 60th and 65th place.
By discipline, McGill was tops in Canada in Life Sciences, ranking 23rd in the world. UBC was 35th and UofT 47th in this category. McGill placed second in medicine, with a world ranking of 32, behind UofT’s 25. Rankings for a variety of other subjects can be found on the ARWU website.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities is conducted by researchers at the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (CWCU), which builds databases of major research universities around the world. Along with the Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings, the Shanghai rankings are considered one of the three major global university rankings systems.
