Professor of the Practice of International Development and director of the Belfer Center’s Science, Technology, and Globalization Project at Harvard University, Calestous Juma is an internationally recognized authority in the application of science and technology to sustainable development. He was the founding director of the African Centre for Technology Studies in Nairobi, Africa’s first independent policy research institution designed to advance research on technology in development. A former executive secretary of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, headquartered in Montreal, Professor Juma is no stranger to McGill and our two campuses.
Professor Juma’s research on the role of biotechnology to advance agricultural development in Africa is highly regarded by government leaders and international agencies. In this regard, he currently directs the Agricultural Innovation in Africa Project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and serves as faculty chair of Innovation for Economic Development at Harvard.
Professor Juma is editor of the International Journal of Technology and Globalisation, and the International Journal of Biotechnology and is a highly prolific writer. His latest book, The New Harvest: Agricultural Innovation in Africa, published by Oxford University has been recently released.

Professeur de pratique du développement international et directeur du Projet Science, technologie et mondialisation du Belfer Center de l’Université Harvard, Calestous Juma est un spécialiste mondialement reconnu de l’application des sciences et de la technologie au développement durable. Il est le directeur fondateur du Centre africain d’études technologiques, premier établissement indépendant de recherche sur les politiques d’Afrique, qui mène des recherches sur le rôle de la technologie dans le développement. Ancien secrétaire général de la Convention sur la diversité biologique des Nations Unies, dont le siège est à Montréal, M. Juma connaît bien McGill et nos deux campus.
Les recherches du M. Juma sur le rôle de la biotechnologie dans le développement agricole en Afrique sont très prisées des chefs de gouvernement et des organismes internationaux. À ce titre, il dirige actuellement le Projet Innovation agricole en Afrique financé par la Fondation Bill et Melinda Gates et préside le Projet Innovation pour le développement économique d’Harvard.
Calestous Juma est rédacteur en chef de l’International Journal of Technology and Globalisation, de l’International Journal of Biotechnology et a écrit de nombreux articles et ouvrages. Son dernier livre, The New Harvest: Agricultural Innovation in Africa (La nouvelle moisson : l’innovation agricole en Afrique) vient tout juste d’être publié par l’Université Oxford.
