
McGill University strengthened its reputation as a global academic leader with an impressive showing in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, released on Jan. 21. The latest results include improvements in many disciplines and reaffirm McGill’s standing as one of Canada’s top-performing universities.
Across the 11 subject areas assessed by THE, McGill makes the world’s Top 100 list in every discipline, competing against hundreds, and in some cases more than 1,500, universities worldwide. Nationally, McGill placed in the Top 3 in 10 of 11 subjects.
In all, seven subjects improved their global positions compared with last year, reflecting gains in overall quality.
Seven subjects at McGill placed in the global Top 50:
- Medical and Health (tied for 27th in the world out of 1,230 universities, up from 29th last year)
- Psychology (27th out of 694 universities)
- Law (33rd out of 450 universities)
- Life Sciences (36th out of 1,211 universities, up from 40th last year)
- Education Studies (37th out of 830 universities, up from 38th last year)
- Social Sciences: 40th out of 1,202 universities, up from 41st last year)
- Arts and Humanities (49th out of 817 universities, up from 51st last year)
Other subjects taught at McGill include:
- Physical Sciences (66th in world out of 1,497 universities)
- Engineering (72nd out of 1,555 universities, up from 73rd last year)
- Computer Science (74th out of 1,165 universities, up from 76th last year)
- Business and Economics (91st out of 1,067 universities)
