McGill University is welcoming its first Deputy Chancellor, Cynthia Price Verreault. On Oct. 9, the Board of Governors approved the Governor Emerita’s appointment to a two-year term, effective immediately.
The new position has been created to provide additional support to the Chancellor, President and Chair of the Board of Governors. Price Verreault will play a key role in representing the University at events and high-level meetings and, more broadly, will provide counsel.
“Our Chancellor is both an ambassador and a ceremonial lead. This appointment will support effectiveness in those roles and strengthen our ability to pursue institutional priorities, particularly across Canada and the rest of world,” said Maryse Bertrand, Chair of the McGill Board of Governors.
“We are delighted that someone with as deep a knowledge of the institution as Ms. Price Verreault has will be working alongside our new Chancellor, Pierre Boivin.”
A dynamic duo
Boivin took office in July 2024. He has a remarkable and diverse track record. Though best known for his successful transformation of the Montreal Canadiens hockey club, he is also celebrated for his support of initiatives in such varied areas as AI research and the health care sector.
“I am humbled to represent McGill on the Quebec, Canadian and international stages. With the diversity of issues facing universities, locally and abroad, having the support of a McGill stalwart like Cynthia Price Verreault will be immensely helpful,” said Boivin.
“She’s been there and seen it all, be it from the vantage point of the Board of Governors, the McGill Alumni Association or the Bicentennial Planning.”
Price Verreault is also a former McGill senator, past member of the International Alma Mater Fund Council and a member of the McGill University Health Centre Patient Advisory Council.
Also honoured as a Quebec Woman of Distinction and with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, she currently serves as Chair of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.
“Ms. Price Verreault has the attributes and experience to represent McGill University and support the Chancellor in his activities at the highest standards,” said Deep Saini, President and Vice-Chancellor.
“She is the ideal candidate to inaugurate this position, sure to set the bar high and contribute greatly to advancing our key initiatives.”
