McGill University is once again Canada’s top university, according to the 2027 QS World University Rankings released June 17. Rated 30th in the world among more than 1,500 institutions, McGill remains the highest-ranked university in Canada and the only Canadian institution to hold a place in the QS’ global top 30 for four consecutive years.
Compiled by Global higher education experts Quacquarelli Symonds, the QS World University Rankings is one of the world’s most comprehensive university assessments, evaluating more than 8,800 institutions across indicators related to research, employability, learning experience and global engagement. This year’s results underscore McGill’s continued strength in areas that matter most to students, employers and society.

While McGill slipped from 27th to 30th globally, it maintained its position as Canada’s leading university and continued to perform strongly across a range of key indicators.
Strong gains in sustainability and global research collaboration
McGill ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in five of the nine indicators measured by QS, up from four in 2025.
The University achieved its strongest result in sustainability, rising to 9th globally from 15th last year and placing it among the world’s leading institutions for advancing environmental, social and governance priorities. The ranking highlights McGill’s efforts to address complex global challenges through research, teaching and campus initiatives.
McGill also improved its standing in academic reputation, climbing to 33rd globally from 35th last year. The indicator is based on the views of academics around the world and remains one of the most heavily weighted measures in the QS methodology.
The University recorded another notable gain in employer reputation, moving to 45th globally from 58th in 2025. The ranking measures employers’ perceptions of graduates’ preparedness and ability to succeed in the workplace.
McGill’s most significant improvement came in the international research network indicator, where it rose to 84th globally from 130th in 2025. The increase highlights the University’s expanding global research partnerships and growing international reach.
The University also maintained a strong position in employment outcomes, ranking 36th globally.
Leading Canada in graduate success
McGill ranked first in Canada for employment outcomes, underscoring the success of its graduates in securing meaningful careers and making an impact in their fields. The result points to the value employers place on a McGill education and the University’s ability to prepare students for a rapidly changing labour market.
McGill also posted strong national performances in student-faculty ratio (2nd) and international student ratio (2nd) demonstrating both the quality of the learning environment and the diversity of its campus community.
In QS’s World University Rankings by Subject, released in March, 43 subjects taught at McGill were rated in the top 50 in the world. McGill ranked second in Engineering – Mineral and Mining, marking a decade in the global top 10 in the category.
