McGill provides a top-tier education in a wide variety of fields, as highlighted in the World University Rankings by Subject 2025, released on January 22 by Times Higher Education (THE).
McGill ranks among the top 90 in the world in all of the 11 subjects assessed, placing six subjects in the top 50. The number of institutions of higher education considered varied by discipline, from 389 for Law to 1,488 for Engineering.
The University’s top performer was Psychology, which jumped from 28th in the 2024 rankings to 21st this year, tied with Northwestern University. Medical and Health ranked 29th. Other Top 50 rankings include Law (33rd), Education Studies (38th), Life Sciences (40th) and Social Sciences (41st).
Within Canada, McGill figures in the Top 5 across all 11 subjects, securing second place both in Arts and Humanities and in Law. The University placed third in Canada in seven areas: Education Studies, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, Psychology and Social Sciences.
THE’s subject rankings evaluate 11 disciplines based on five performance indicators: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and Industry.
