On November 14, the Heart and Stroke Foundation honoured three researchers – including two McGill faculty members – with an award of excellence in research. These awards, presented annually, highlight the exceptional work of researchers working in the field of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health.
Established in 1952, Heart & Stroke is a Canadian charity dedicated to advocacy, education and the funding of research surrounding heart disease and stroke. Over that period, the death rate associated with these diseases has decreased by more than 75 per cent – thanks, in part, to scientific advances made possible by research funded by Heart & Stroke.
Here are the three researchers who won Heart & Stroke awards:
Dr. Gil Bub, Associate Professor, Dept. of Physiology, received the highest award of the evening, the Jean Coutu Group Award of Excellence in Cardiovascular Research. This annual award, valued at $50,000, is presented to an experienced researcher for their research on cardiac arrhythmia. By presenting this award, which will be matched by the foundation, the Jean Coutu Group emphasizes its commitment to the cause and the importance of investing in cutting-edge research on heart disease and stroke to prevent disease and save lives.
Dr. George Thanassoulis, cardiologist, Director of Preventive and Genomic Cardiology at the MUHC and Associate Professor of Medicine, received the $10,000 John J. Day M.D. award of excellence, presented as a bequest. This award of excellence in research is granted annually to the researcher from McGill University who received the highest evaluation in the grant-in-aid competition in cardiovascular research.
Dr. Ayman El Ali, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the Université Laval, was presented with the Louise Rousselle Trottier award of excellence. This award, valued at $10,000, is presented to a young researcher who has received an excellent evaluation in the grant-in-aid competition.
